Episode #11: The Truth About Bug Splats On Car Paint & Why They Won't Just Wash Off! 🐛☀️

Summer is brilliant for road trips, sunny evenings, and finding literally any excuse to take the car out.

It's also brilliant for one other thing...

Covering the front of your car in what can only be described as a bug graveyard.

Bonnet. Bumper. Mirrors. Number plate. Windscreen. You name it.

Now, we know what a lot of people think...

"I'll leave it for now and get it cleaned properly in a few weeks."

Unfortunately... that's where the trouble starts.

It's Not Just Dirt...

Bugs aren't just messy. Once they've hit your paintwork, they start breaking down almost immediately.

Then the sun gets involved.

Those lovely warm days that we all enjoy? They effectively bake the bug remains onto your paintwork, giving them more time to etch into your vehicle's clear coat.

Sounds dramatic... but we see it all the time.

"But It'll Come Off During My Next Clean..."

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions we come across.

A professional wash will remove the bug residue that's sitting on the surface.

But if it's been left there for weeks (or months), there's a good chance the damage has already been done.

The bug itself disappears...

The mark it leaves behind doesn't.

Those little ghost-shaped outlines you can sometimes see on a bonnet or bumper?

That's where the clear coat has actually been etched.

At that point, washing alone isn't going to fix it.

So... What Does Fix It?

Depending on how severe the damage is, machine polishing is often the only way to safely remove the etched layer and restore the finish.

The important thing to remember is that polishing is correcting damage.

It's far better to prevent it in the first place.

Our Advice? Don't Let Them Settle.

If you've been on a long motorway run or noticed your front end looking like it's hosted an insect convention...

Get them off sooner rather than later.

Even if you can't give the whole car a wash, using a dedicated bug remover or giving the affected areas a quick clean can make a huge difference.

Your paintwork will thank you for it.

A Little Protection Goes a Long Way

Waxes and ceramic coatings don't stop bugs hitting your car (if only they could...).

What they do is make them much easier to remove before they have chance to bond with the paintwork.

It's one of those things that doesn't seem important...

...until you're looking at bug etching that could have been avoided.

We know... bug splats probably aren't the most exciting thing to think about when you're enjoying the summer.

But after seeing countless vehicles come through our doors with marks that could have been avoided, it's one of those little things we always tell customers to keep an eye on.

The bugs might have had a bad day hitting your bonnet... but your paintwork doesn't need to suffer for it.

A quick clean, a little protection, and some regular care can go a long way.
