Episode #12: Conversations That Open Doors

Sometimes, the biggest opportunities don’t come from a perfectly planned marketing strategy, a paid advert or waiting for the “right time” to do something.

Sometimes, they start with a simple conversation.

Recently, RS Valeting had an incredible opportunity to work on a collection of very special vehicles belonging to the owner of a hugely successful clothing brand. The opportunity itself was amazing, but the story behind how it came about is even more important.

Because it all started by simply having the confidence to go over, speak to the right person and ask the right questions.

You Never Know Where a Conversation Might Lead

How many opportunities have we all missed because we were too nervous to introduce ourselves, too worried about being told no, or convinced ourselves that they probably wouldn't be interested anyway?

The truth is, you never know where one conversation might lead. It might simply be a good chat. It could turn into a useful connection, a future client or an introduction to someone else. And every now and then, it could open a door you didn't even know existed.

But you'll never know unless you take that first step.

What's the worst that can happen? They say, “No thanks.” And that's it. You carry on with your day, knowing you at least took the shot.

You lose nothing by trying, but you could gain an opportunity you never expected.

Confidence Isn't About Never Feeling Nervous

You don't need to be the loudest person in the room or have the perfect sales pitch ready to go. Sometimes confidence is simply doing something even when it feels a little uncomfortable.

Walk over. Introduce yourself. Start the conversation. Ask the question.

Business is built around people. People work with people they trust, recommend people they've had good experiences with and remember the people who made an effort to connect with them.

Not every conversation will lead to your dream client - but you only need one conversation to lead somewhere unexpected.

Communication Matters

This also brings me onto something we hear about far too often within the detailing industry: communication.

You can be incredibly talented at what you do. Your polishing work can be flawless, your interiors can look incredible and your attention to detail can be second to none. But if your communication is poor, it can quickly become the reason a potential client goes elsewhere or an existing client doesn't return.

We've all heard the stories of messages being left unanswered, customers not being kept updated, bookings becoming unclear or expectations not being managed properly.

Your service starts long before you touch the vehicle. It starts with that first message or conversation. The way you answer questions, explain your process and keep your customer informed is all part of the experience.

Great communication is what's going to help you get new clients, and retain existing ones.

Take the Shot

As business owners, it's easy to get stuck in the routine of posting online, waiting for enquiries, doing the work and repeating the process. But sometimes, you need to step outside of that routine.

Talk to people. Attend events. Introduce yourself. Ask questions.

And don't go into every conversation thinking about what you can sell someone. Be genuine, take an interest and actually listen. The best opportunities often start with relationships, not sales pitches.

This experience was a great reminder for us that sometimes you simply have to put yourself out there. Send the message. Make the call. Walk over and introduce yourself.

You might get told no.

But at least you took the shot.

And sometimes, instead of a no, you'll get a conversation.

& you never know where that might lead.
